Home office makeover

Hi all,

Over the past few months, I’ve been doing lots and lots of thinking about how I can be happier. I love my job and my DC life, but I felt like I was lacking a creative outlet. Hence starting up blogging again! Blogging has been so much fun, but I still felt like I needed to keep my graphic design skills in shape, so I’ve decided to start doing more freelance and personal design work. Graphic design has been a huge passion of mine since high school yearbook when I first learned all about Adobe Creative Suite for the first time. For three years through college I was the Design Director at my school’s student-run daily newspaper. Basically, starting my new non-design job has been a shock.

Oh! How I’ve missed you, Mr. Pen Tool!

My first step in picking up design again is getting a home office. My apartment is a shoebox (all you DC girls are invited to come see how tiny it is for yourself – the tour will only take 2 seconds) and I have zero work space. So I headed out to Ikea last weekend to pick up my first item on the shopping list: a desk.

I’ve been getting ideas together to compile my ideal office environment to encourage creative productivity, so here are the best of the web, courtesy of some major Pinterest browsing.

  1. Little Bits of Lovely  via Ish and Chi
  2. Design Sponge (best design blog out there, in my opinion!)
  3. decor 8
  4. Cupcakes and Cashmere
  5. La Maison Boheme

After much office inspiration was found, I narrowed down a list of what I was looking for:

  • a big, clean work space
  • a fun lamp
  • color
  • a corkboard full of notes and inspiration

Despite being a little disheveled and completely unfinished, I’ve decided to show a shot of my desk in the middle of this process.

Disclaimer: it’s still a work in progress, for sure! I’d still like a bookshelf in my office to have design books and such nearby. Turns out my tiny room doesn’t have that space free. Once I move into my new (and hopefully more spacious) apartment this summer, I plan on upgrading from the kitchen chair to something much softer and prettier. I cannot stress enough how tiny my bedroom is, so this desk is literally squeezed between the end of my bed and my window. This desk is about as big as my office space will get for the time being.

In the meantime….

Am I the only one obsessed with Joss & Main? Do yourself a favor and check it out, especially if you’re doing any sort of home decorating projects on a budget. Somewhat similar to Groupon or Living Social, they have a select number of limited timed sample sales on couches, pillows, blenders, duvet covers, you name it. In fact, they just had an incredible Missoni Home sale this week. I check this shopping site out every single day, multiple times a day – I’m addicted.

In the end, I’ll probably continue to check Joss & Main regularly to see if they have any great deals on chairs. And if I don’t find anything by moving time, I’ll start stalking the local Home Goods and TJ Maxx stores. I’m pretty talented at scouring these bargain stores to find a diamond in the rough, and have walked away with some incredible furniture deals there before.
Check back to reidmore for more on my graphic design projects! I’m planning a post with more details soon.
